The Department of Informatics and Telematics has as a new Visiting Professor Artemi Chatzigeorgiou, Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Thessaly, from the spring semester of 2015-2016

Artemis Chatzigeorgiou completed undergraduate studies in computer science (University of Stuttgart) and postgraduate studies in molecular biology (University of Jena). From 2001-2007 she held a position as an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania (USA) in the Department of Genetics of the Medical School and a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science in the School of Mechanical Engineers, to which she is still affiliated today (adjunct professor).

In 2007 she started her laboratory at the Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Alexander Fleming” (http://www.fleming.gr) as a researcher. In 2012 she was appointed a regular Professor of Bioinformatics in the Department of Computer Engineering, Telecommunications and Networks of the University of Thessaly.

Her scientific interests are systems computational biology, machine learning, pattern recognition, analysis of non-coding regions of the genome and gene analysis combined with disease.

She has received the “Young Investigation Career Award” from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and her research works have been published in widely read journals such as Nature, Science, PNAS, Genome Research, etc. Her papers have more than 4000 citations (ISI).

The gene data analysis tools implemented in her laboratory are available on the web portal http://microrna.gr. This portal has more than 6000 visitors and more than 12,000 visits per month from researchers around the world.
