Dr. John Violos is an Asst. Professor in the Dept. of Geography at Harokopio University of Athens, specializing in Geospatial Databases and Big Geospatial Data. He served as a member of the European Commission Digital Single Market working group on the code of conduct for switching and porting data between cloud service providers.
He has held research positions at École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS), Université du Québec, Canada; the Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH); and the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), Greece. He has participated in more than 18 internationally funded research projects (EU, Canada, and South Korea), serving as Work Package Leader and Task Leader.
He has taught more than 12 courses as an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Informatics and Telematics of Harokopio University of Athens, as well as in the MSc Program in Bioinformatics at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He has authored over 80 publications in journals and conference proceedings and has served as a guest editor and reviewer for more than 30 international journals, as well as a program committee member and reviewer for over 30 international conferences.
He holds a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, during which he worked as an intern at the Hellenic Public Power Corporation (HPPC), and a PhD from the same university. His awards include the Best Paper Award at IEEE CISOSE 2023, Best Paper Award at IEEE iThings 2021, the Best Course Teaching Award (Adjunct Professor) in 2021, and the Thomaidion Award in 2017.
