vkoukisWe would like to inform you that on next Tuesday (19/12/2017) at 19.00-22.00 at the Amphitheatre in the context of the postgraduate course «Modern Architectures of Computational Systems» the speaker Dr. Vangelis Koukis has been invited to give a presentation. The title of the talk is «The Cloud: What it is, what it brings, and how to build your own». Dr. Vangelis Koukis was the technical lead of the development of Okeanos, while in recent years he has founded a successful start-up (http://arrikto.com/), that uses Cloud technologies. Below is a summary of his talk as well as a short biographical note of the speaker.

Sincerely,

From the Secretariat of the Postgraduate Programme

Summary

The talk is organized in roughly three parts:
The first part is an introduction to the concepts of Cloud Computing. What the cloud is, Software-, Platform-, Infrastructure-as-a-Service, and the X-as-a-Service trend. The technologies behind the cloud and how the evolution of virtualization made the Cloud possible. At this point, we will talk about using the cloud as an application developer, and discuss the shift from monolithic applications running on heavy servers to the vision of distributed, "cloud-native" applications running as a set of independent micro-services.
In the second part, the talk moves to the process of implementing a cloud, focusing on Infrastructure-as-a-Service clouds. It presents briefly the three main pillars in delivering IaaS, Compute, Networking and Storage, using two open source cloud implementations -- OpenStack and Synnefo -- as case studies. We compare their architecture, and highlight the main design decisions that influenced each approach. We focus on the challenges in developing scalable, distributed data systems, the tradeoff between consistency and scalability, and the role of transactional (non-) guarantees.
Finally, the third part focuses on Storage. We discuss the importance of the storage layer in achieving performance and reliability in the cloud, examine Ceph, a well-known open source storage system, and discuss the biggest challenges with delivering advanced functionality while scaling beyond a single datacenter.
Speaker Bio:

Vangelis Koukis is Founder & CTO of Arrikto, a stealth-mode startup building the next generation of storage intelligence, unifying the way to access, manage, and store data in large-scale, heterogeneous and hybrid environments.
Prior to co-founding Arrikto, he worked with GRNET as the Technical Lead of the team which undertook the task of building GRNET's large-scale public IaaS cloud service, ~okeanos. The software powering the service, Synnefo, grew into a separate open source project, used to power a number of clouds today both in academic institutions and in the industry.
He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, and a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering also from the NTUA.He can be reached at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
