Guide for International Students

To better support international students coming from countries outside the European Union (third-country nationals), Harokopio University provides a concise guide addressing key questions regarding studies and residence in Greece.

Understanding the procedures related to entry visas (VISA), residence permits, as well as students’ rights and obligations, is essential for a smooth transition and a successful academic experience.

Entry into Greece and Student VISA

All students from countries outside the European Union are required to obtain a special student entry visa (VISA) before arriving in Greece. This requirement also applies to nationals of countries exempt from tourist VISA requirements.

Without the appropriate student VISA:

  • a residence permit for studies cannot be issued,
  • and the student will need to return to their country of origin to obtain one.

Residence Permit for Studies

After arriving in Greece, students must apply for a residence permit for studies at the competent municipality (e.g., Municipality of Athens).

Key points:

  • The application must be submitted before the VISA expires.
  • The permit is reviewed by the competent Immigration Service.
  • In some cases, an interview may be required.
  • The residence permit is usually valid for one year and may be renewed, provided the student demonstrates satisfactory academic progress.

Required Documents

To obtain a residence permit, students are generally required to provide:

  • Valid passport with student VISA
  • Recent photographs
  • Certificate of enrollment in the Informatics and Telematics program
  • Proof of sufficient financial resources (approximately €500 per month)
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Medical certificate

Depending on the case, additional supporting documents may also be required.

Financial Requirements

Students must demonstrate that they possess sufficient financial resources to cover their living expenses during their stay in Greece.

The indicative minimum amount is approximately €500 per month, unless the student is supported through a scholarship.

Right to Work

International students are permitted to work during their studies:

  • only on a part-time basis,
  • and subject to official authorization.

Employment requires full compliance with Greek labor and tax legislation.

Travel and Mobility

With a valid residence permit:

  • students may travel to their country of origin and return without requiring a new VISA,
  • they may travel within the Schengen Area for up to 3 months.

Students may also participate in mobility or exchange programs within the European Union.

Family Matters

Family reunification is generally not permitted for international students.

Family members may visit Greece only with a short-term tourist visa.

Student Obligations

Students are required to:

  • renew their residence permit on time,
  • declare any changes in personal information (address, family status, etc.),
  • comply with Greek laws and regulations.

Failure to comply may result in non-renewal or revocation of the residence permit.

After Graduation

After completing their studies:

  • students are generally required to leave Greece,
  • unless they continue with postgraduate studies or obtain another residence status.

Student Rights

International students enjoy:

  • access to healthcare services,
  • participation in student life,
  • access to justice and public services,
  • protection under the Greek Constitution and international conventions.
