AS AN HONORARY DOCTOR
OF THE DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATICS AND TELEMATICS OF THE SCHOOL OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
OF HAROKOPIO UNIVERSITY

On Wednesday, 9 January 2019, the ceremony for the conferment of an honorary doctorate on MIT Professor Ioannis Tsitsiklis by the Department of Informatics and Telematics of the School of Digital Technology was held in the Amphitheatre «Georgios Karampatzos».

John N. Tsitsiklis was born in Thessaloniki in 1958. He received a B.S. in Mathematics (1980), as well as a B.S. (1980), M.S. (1981) and Ph.D. (1984) in Electrical Engineering, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

During the 1983-84 academic year, he was an active assistant professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, Stanford, California. Since 1984 he has worked in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he is currently the Clarence J. Lebel Professor of Electrical Engineering.

He has served as director of the Laboratory of Information Systems and Decision Systems (LIDS), after serving as Coordinator (Spring 1996 and 1997) and Coordinating Director (2008-2013). He has also served as co-director of the Operations Research Center (ORC) (2002-2005) and as a member of the National Council for Research and Technology in Greece (2005-2007) and of the related Sectoral Research Council for Informatics (2011-2013). Finally, he served (2013-2016) as Chairman of the Council of Harokopio University.

His research interests concern the areas of systems, optimization, control, and operations research.

The conferral ceremony began with addresses by the Rector of Harokopio University, Professor Maria Nikolaidi, and the Dean of the School of Digital Technology & acting as Chair of the Department of Informatics and Telematics, Professor Demosthenes Anagnostopoulos. Next, the honoree's work was presented and he was subsequently conferred the title of Honorary Doctor. The conferral ceremony concluded with the honoree's lecture on the topic: “Consensus algorithms: theory and interpretations”
